Sober Cara Delevingne Recalls Getting Drunk at Age 8

Cara Delevingne remembers getting drunk at her aunt’s wedding when she was just 8 years old.

While reflecting on her decades-long battle with drug abuse, the 31-year-old “Suicide Squad” star recalled her aunt’s 2001 wedding during an interview with the Sunday Times published July 7.

“I got drunk that day,” she said. “I was eight, what a crazy age to get drunk.”

Delevingne, who has been sober since 2022, admitted to using substances to help her through difficult times.

“I always thought drugs and alcohol helped me cope,” she told the outlet, according to People . “But they didn’t, they kept me sad and super depressed. I feel like I have my power back and I’m not being controlled by other things.”

It wasn’t until the model saw photos of herself acting strangely after the 2022 Burning Man festival that she faced reality and sobered up.

“Listen, I signed up for this, this is my job, this is what I do. But without it, would I be sober now?” she asked.

“I would never have been Sally Bowles in the West End, I’m super proud of that,” she said, referring to her role in the London West End film “Cabaret.”

Despite Delevingne’s new path, she doesn’t mind socializing with others who also drink at parties and festivals.

Last month she attended the Glastonbury Festival in England while completely sober.

Reflecting on the experience, she told the outlet, “It smelled, my feet hurt and I didn’t stay up as long, but it was still so much fun. I never want my life to change that way.”

The actress also mentioned the fire that destroyed her $7 million Los Angeles mansion in March, claiming that she likely would have turned to drugs as a coping mechanism if she hadn’t had such an addiction.

“It sucks, but everyone was safe and, like with everything, if I hadn’t been sober, I would still be thinking about it,” she said.

Since getting clean, the actress has opened up about her journey, admitting it has made her “more stable” and “calm” despite resisting temptations.

“It is not [been easy]but there’s never been a moment where I thought, ‘This isn’t worth it,'” she told Elle UK in July 2023. “It’s been worth every second. I just don’t know what it would take for me to give it up.”

After completing a 12-step treatment program in 2023, the “Only Murders in the Building” star also revealed that she plans to permanently remove her tattoos to symbolize a “fresh start” of her “new beginning.”
