Minnie Driver knows her relationship with Josh Brolin was never meant to be.
The 54-year-old “Good Will Hunting” actress said in an interview published this weekend that she’s glad she didn’t marry her ex-fiancé.
“The one time I got engaged, I think that would have been the biggest mistake of my life,” she told The Sunday Times.
Driver and Brolin, 56, fell in love on the set of the 2000 film “Slow Burn.”
They were engaged for 6 months before announcing their split in October 2001.
“Minnie Driver and Josh Brolin have decided to cancel their wedding plans. Their decision is mutual and amicable,” said a statement from Driver’s publicist.
In her interview with The Sunday Times, Driver said her parents never married because of her father’s infidelities, which affected her own romantic relationships.
“When I look at my history, I wanted to get married so badly and then I chose men who were absolutely not the right men to marry,” she said.
“So I would continue to long to be married and have that conservative version of myself [of a relationship]find men who aren’t interested in that, and if you find one who is, run a mile.”
Driver has been in a relationship with writer and director Addison O’Dea since 2019.
“Now I’m with someone who doesn’t want to get married, but who is the most devoted, loving, extraordinary… Everything I could ever want in my childish idea of a husband, he really is,” she said.
Before her relationship with Brolin, the “Ella Enchanted” star dated Matt Damon, after they met on the set of “Good Will Hunting” in the 1990s.
Their romance ended just before the 1998 Oscars, and Damon, 53, took his new girlfriend to the ceremony.
Damon announced his split from Driver on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” that year.
“I was with Minnie for a while, but we’re not really romantically involved anymore. We’re just really good friends and I love her to bits… I care about her very much,” he said. “We care about each other very much. It wasn’t meant to be, you know? And if it’s not meant to be, then it’s not meant to be.”
In 2022, Driver reflected on the split in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, saying the ordeal caused “torment” in her life.
“It’s so hard because it’s not intentional. He couldn’t help it that he became so famous and that his life was being scrutinized, just like mine,” she said.
Both of Driver’s famous exes have since split.
Damon married Luciana Barroso in 2005 and the couple have three daughters.
Brolin married Diane Lane in 2004, but they divorced in 2013. Since 2016, he has been married to Kathryn Boyd and they have two children together.
