It’s a day of the sun before we get to the day of the moon and boy is it scorching hot. We’ve had temperatures in the 90s and I’m done with it. Every time I leave my office (which is a converted garden shed in my back garden) to walk inside I groan. It’s too hot! At least I have this little space with air conditioning. That’s a saving grace, that’s for sure.
But enough complaining! Let’s solve today’s Strands puzzle!
How to Play Strands
The New York Times Strands puzzle is a play on the classic word search. It’s currently in beta, meaning it will only survive if enough people play it every day. Keep playing, in other words. It’s our collective mission to keep this game alive and get it on the app!
There is a new game of Strands to play every day. The game presents you with a six by eight letter grid. The goal is to find a group of words that have something in common, and you get a sense of what that theme is. When you find a theme word, it will remain highlighted in blue.
You also need to find a special word, a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram connects two opposite sides of the board. Although the theme words will not be a proper noun, the spangram can be a proper noun. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.
Strings isn’t in the New York Times Games app yet, but you can play it here.

Today’s strand distribution
I got closer with my guesses today. I guessed SLEET when it should have been STEEL. I guessed COAL before I found CHARCOAL. Once I had that and FLINT, I found the spangram, GRAYSCALE, although I tried just GRAY at first. After that, it was pretty easy to clean up PLATINUM, GRAPHITE, and SLATE.
